# Learning Outcome
LO-1 Explains the fundamental theories of news sociology (Schudson, Tuchman, Gans) and how these theories engage in dialogue with critical political economy (Herman & Chomsky, Murdock), cultural studies (Hall), and post-structuralist power analyses (Foucault).
LO-2 Defines the triple level of analysis in news production (micro: routines/practices, meso: organizational structure/professional ideology, macro: political economy/state) and interrelates how these levels mutually shape each other.
LO-3 Interprets Gramsci's concept of hegemony within the context of news production and media discourses; explains the concepts of manufacturing consent, counter-hegemony, and civil society with examples from the Turkish media.
LO-4 Critically evaluates how professional ideologies and normative discourses such as "objectivity," "impartiality," and "news value" are historical constructs that legitimize and conceal power relations.
LO-5 Analyzes how the digital transformation (platforms, algorithms, metrics) has transformed traditional news production routines, professional identity, and politico-economic structures, and created new power struggles.
LO-6 Develops a research design capable of applying the necessary qualitative research methods (ethnographic observation, in-depth interviews, discourse analysis, document analysis) to map the news production process of a media organization.
LO-7 Subjects a specific news text (written, visual, television, or digital) to a multi-layered analysis within the context of the organizational routines, economic constraints, and dominant ideological frameworks that produced it.
LO-8 Interprets the media-politics-economy connections in Turkey (holding structures, state advertisements, trustee appointments, legal regulations) through concrete cases from a comparative and historical perspective.
LO-9 Critically discusses the counter-hegemonic potential and inherent limitations of alternative/independent media practices by comparing them with the production logic and power structures of mainstream media.
LO-10 Utilizes academic writing skills to design and write an original, theoretically grounded, and methodologically coherent doctoral-level research proposal at the intersection of news production, representation, and power.
LO-11 Develops a critical literacy and researcher skepticism that systematically questions the power relations behind practices and discourses presented as "natural," "neutral," or "inevitable" in the media.
LO-12 Discusses and evaluates alternative practices, ethical principles, and political proposals with the potential to transform power relations in news production.
