Weeks Learning Outcomes Topics Teaching Methods
Week - 1 Description of Immunology and descrition of specific terms in Immunolgy; Immune system and importance of Immune system; determining awareness level
Week - 2 Lymphoid and non-lymphoid organs involved in the immune system. Immune system cells and their localization. Innate and adaptive immune responses. The importance and differences of these responses.
Week - 3 Cells involved in the Innate Immune Response. To explain the pathogen-associated molecular patterns that cause innate immune response and the importance of their pathogen recognition receptors in the host.
Week - 4 Cells and molecules involved in the adaptive immune response. Receptors involved in innate and adaptive immune response cell surfaces and their importance. Innate and adaptive immune response relationships.
Week - 5 Histological structure and function of primary and secondary lymphoid organs. Localization of lymphoid cells in these organs.
Week - 6 Humoral immune response. Structure and functions of immunoglobulins and their subtypes. Structure and functions of immunoglobulin receptors. Explaining the relationship between immunoglobulins and cellular immune response.
Week - 7 Midterm examination and evaluation of questions and answers
Week - 8 Identification of cell types involved in cellular immune response. Identification of T lymphocytes and their subtypes and explaining their functions. Explaining the structure and functions of T cell receptors, explaining the importance of T cell receptors-MHC relationship.
Week - 9 Antigen recognition mechanism of T lymphocytes. Antigen presenting cells and T lymphocyte relationship. Explaining antigen presentation to helper T lymphocytes and cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Factors involved in the recognition of extracellular and intracellular pathogens by T-lymphocytes.
Week - 10 The importance and functions of cytokines are explained. Classification according to cytokine receptor structures and according to their functions are explained. Which cytokines are secreted in immune stystem cells are explained. Chemokines and chemokine receptor structures are explained and chemokine classification is made. The mechanisms and action of chemokine, chemokine receptors and their effects on the immune system are explained.
Week - 11 Cellular, secretory and genetic factors involved in the regulation of the immune response are explained. The concept of immunological tolerance and its importance are explained. The roles of anergy, suppression and apoptosis in immune tolerance are explained. Immunological tolerance mechanisms (central and peripheral) in B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes are explained.
Week - 12 Classical, alternative and mannan-binding lectin pathways in the complement system are explained.
Week - 13 Adhesion molecules and the role of adhesion molecules in the cellular migration system are explained.
Week - 14 Final exam and question&answer; evaluation
