  • By the end of the course, students will be able to describe syntax and types of grammar.
  • The student: 1.1. defines mental grammar, 1.2. analyzes and explains universal grammar, 1.3. compares and contrasts prescriptive and descriptive grammar.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to describe constituency and all the processes associated with it.
  • The student: 2.1. identifies constituency tests and uses them to determine constituents in a phrase/sentence, 2.2. explains types of relationship between the members of constituents, 2.3. defines the terminology associated with tree diagrams, 2.4. compares and contrast tree diagram and square bracket analyses, 2.5. shows the hierarchical structure of phrases and sentences through tree diagrams, 2.6. explains structural ambiguity through tree diagrams.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to identify phrasal categories.
  • The student: 3.1. defines types of phrases, 3.2. writes phrase structure rules, 3.3. draws labeled tree diagrams of phrases, 3.4. matches tree diagrams with phrase structure rules.
