Students will be able to critically analyze English-language historical texts related to the Ottoman Empire from the 19th century.
Students will gain a thorough understanding of key events and phenomena in 19th-century Ottoman relations with the West, and will be able to place these relations in their historical context.
Students will be able to discuss how language in historical texts reflects ideological perspectives and how Western perceptions of the Ottoman Empire were shaped.
Students will be able to accurately analyze 19th-century travelogues, missionary writings, and diplomatic documents within their historical context.
Students will gain the ability to conduct comparative analyses of different historical texts and interpret the Ottoman Empire from multiple perspectives.
