Aims of the Course The aim of this course is to enable students to comprehend the formation process of Roman Imperial art by examining the historical development, stylistic characteristics, iconographic programs, and ideological content of Roman art during the Augustan period within the framework of the political, social, and cultural transformations of the era. In this context, the course aims to evaluate the role of art in establishing political legitimacy during the transition from the Roman Republic to the Principate, Augustus's art and architectural policies, public building programs, and developments in sculpture, portraiture, reliefs, and other artistic disciplines. Furthermore, it aims to examine the reinterpretation of Classical Greek and Hellenistic artistic traditions in Augustan art, the relationship between idealism and realism, imperial propaganda, religious symbolism, mythological narratives, and the reflections of dynastic ideology on the visual arts. Within the scope of the course, it is intended that students be able to analyze architectural structures, sculptures, monuments, and iconographic programs of the Augustan period within their chronological, typological, stylistic, and historical contexts, and to evaluate the influences of Augustan art on subsequent Roman Imperial art using scientific methods.
