The foundation of The Department of Speech and Language Therapy was based on the establisment of The Education, Research and Application Center for Language and Speech Disorders in 1999, and the establishment of the Speech and Language Therapy M.Sc. Program affliated with the Department of Speech and Language Therapy in 2000-2001 academic year in The Institute of Health Sciences, as well as the initiation of Doctor of Philosophy program in 2004. 

The speech and language therapist is defined as a legal member of a medical profession. The scientific field of this profession include complementary interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary independent fields such as biomedical sciences (anatomy, physiology,neurology pediatry, psychiatry, genetics, otolaryngology,phsical therapy and rehabilitation, audiology), clinical linguistics (phonetics, acoustics, phonology, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics), psychology, cognitive nueropsychology and special educational sciences. The education is carried on with compulsory and practical clinical studies as well as elective courses. Consequently, this creates a contribution to meet the requirements of the region and the country in terms of qualified and equipped certified staff. Today, speech and language therapy is one of the most preferred and competitive professions in the world.

Because almost all the course materials are in English, the Department of Speech and Language Therapy considers that it is beneficial for the students to study English at the School of Foreign Languages for a year even though it is not obligatory. It is possible to see that foreign scientists have been hosted the historical development of Speech and Language Therapy postgraduate programmes.
