Sociology is a social science discipline aimed at understanding and explaining the social world. Its main subjects are social structures, social institutions and social interactions. It examines various social institutions such as family, economy, religion, urban, media, communication and the relationships of these institutions with each other. It analyses various social phenomena such as gender, migration, violence and social stratification at global, national and local levels. It also aims to understand social change through historical and contemporary analyses.

Sociology is a branch of science that provides to comprehensively and deeply understand and explain social structures, social institutions and social interaction. Our undergraduate and graduate programs aim to educate students who can analyse and evaluate social phenomena at global, national and local levels from a sociological perspective and associate with other disciplines such as economics, history, politics and philosophy. In our all degree program, studies are conducted on various subjects such as migration, violence, health, media, gender, urban, space, body and social change.

Mission of the Department of Sociology:
The mission of the Department of Sociology is to provide an education aimed at understanding and explaining social structures, institutions, and interactions with a comprehensive and in-depth perspective, while enhancing students' abilities in critical thinking, conducting research, and developing solutions to social problems.

Vision of the Department of Sociology:
The vision of the Department of Sociology is to train expert sociologists who are oriented toward lifelong learning; capable of interpreting social problems at local, regional, and global levels from a sociological perspective; able to compare different social groups; capable of developing proposals to solve social problems; and proficient in research methods and techniques relevant to the field.

 

The Department of Sociology aims to train sociologists and candidates for academicians who have acquired competence in scientific thinking, adopted the principle of analysing and solving problems and have the qualifications and basic knowledge to contribute to society in their professions. During their education, students have the opportunity for voluntary internship in various private and public institutions, as well as to gain experience in conducting field researches in applied courses.

Graduates of the department can become researchers and academicians, be employed as sociologists in various private and public institutions and organizations, as well as provide beneficial and productive services as social experts, family counsellors, and social pedagogues. In addition, our students, who gain competence to work as social workers and researchers in many different non-governmental organizations, family counselling institutions and research/consulting companies, can also be employed in the departments of public relations and human resources in private and public institutions.

The educational objectives of the Department of Sociology are as follows:

  • Having competence in defining and explaining sociological theories,

  • Being proficient in understanding sociological research methods and techniques,

  • Having the ability to comparing and analyzing different social groups,

  • Being able to interpreting local and global social developments sociologically,

  • Focusing on lifelong learning and developing proposals for the solution of social problems,

  • Possessing awareness of the historical and cultural heritage of the city/region/country in which one lives
