Week - 1 Introduction: The Rise of Philosophy in the Islamic Civilization&Philosophy in the Ottomans; The gradual decline of philosophical activity: Medrese and Philosophy
Week - 2 The beginnings and development of Western philosophy in the Ottoman Empire, from Tanzimat onward (1839): 1. The fundamental changes in intellectual perspectives& mentality- Science, education, culture, the way of evaluating the Western civilizations, etc., 2. The beginning of Philosophy education at Dâr’ülfünûn.
Week - 3 The leading intellectuals in the introduction of Western thought and philosophy to the Ottoman Turks: Mehmet Tahir Münif Paşa, Ali Suâvî, Beşir Fuad, Ahmed Midhat Efendi.
Week - 4 Philosophy during the IInd Constitution (1908-1922): Basic Thoughts and Ideas (or –isms): Baha Tevfik& Materialism, Şehbenderzâde Filibeli Ahmet Hilmi&Spiritualism, Rıza Tevfik& Positivism.
Week - 5 Philosophy during the IInd Constitution (1908-1922): Basic Thoughts and Ideas (or –isms)-continued: Ziya Gökalp& Sociological Positivism [influences on Atatürk], Intuitionism-Bergsonism.
Week - 6 Evaluation of the philosophical developments in the Ottoman Empire. Philosophy education, institutionalised at Dâr’ülfünûn- The condition during the decline of the Empire and the establishment of the new State.
Week - 7 The attitude of the New Republic towards Dâr’ülfünûn and its autonomy before 1933, Atatürk’s conception of philosophy and the education policy of the young Turkish Republic in general. 1933 University Reformation and the Department of Philosophy at İstanbul University.
Week - 8 The influence of German philosophers on the development of philosophy as an academic discipline: Hans Reichenbach and positivism, Ernst von Aster and history of philosophy.
Week - 9 The influence of German philosophers on the development of philosophy as an academic discipline-continued: Nicolai Hartmann, new ontology, philosophical anthropology. Research on Turco-Islamic philosophy at İstanbul University: Hilmi Ziya Ülken.
