  • By the end of the course, the students will distinguish between linguistic and non-linguistic approaches toward defining language.
  • The student: 1.1 explains the grammarian approach, 1.2 explains the linguistic approach, 1.3 compares descriptivism and prescriptivism, 1.4 lists where and when each comes in handy.
  • By the end of the course, the students wil be able to define the properties of language.
  • The student: 2.1. names the unique properties of the human language, 2.2. defines the unique properties of human language, 2.3. illustrates the characteristics of human language, 2.4. identifies the characteristics of human language in given examples, 2.5. compares human language and animal communication systems, 2.6. compares oral and sign languages, 2.7. compares human and machine languages
  • By the end of the course, the students will be able to discuss the origins of language.
  • The student: 3.1. explains the theories about the origins of language, 3.2. compares and contrasts these theories.
  • By the end of the course, the students will be able to discuss the processes in the development of writing systems.
  • The student: 4.1. distinguishes pictograms, logograms, and ideograms, 4.2. distinguishes rebus writing, syllabic writing, and alphabetic writing
  • By the end of the course, the students will be able to discuss the relationship between language, thought, and culture.
  • The student: 5.1 explains the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, 5.2 lists the arguments supporting the hypothesis, 5.3 lists the arguments against the hypothesis.
