  • By the end of the course, students will be able to distinguish between the major concepts associated with language and linguistics.
  • The student: 1.1. Defines linguistics 1.2. Defines language and componentes of language 1.3. Explains contrastive analysis and uses it. 1.4. Tells the differemce between sound and letter as well as speech and writing 1.5. Recognized the International Phonetic Alphabet and uses it.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to explain how the sound component of language works.
  • The student: 2.1. defines phonetics. 2.2. explains the sub-branches of phonetics. 2.3. lists speech organs. 2.4. explains sound and speech sound production.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to explain vowel and consonant production.
  • The student: 3.1. defines articulatory phonetics 3.2. classifies consonants in term of their place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing. 3.3. classifies vowels in terms of backness, height, and rounding.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to distinguish between Turkish and English consonants and vowels and identify problem sounds.
  • The student: 4.1. lists Turkish and English consonants and vowels. 4.2. explains the similarities and differences between Turkish and English consonant and vowels. 4.3. diagnoses the areas of difficulty for learning on the basis of contrastive analysis.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to distinguish between phonemes and allophones.
  • The student: 5.1. defines phonemes. 5.2. defines allophones. 5.3. lists the allophones of Turkish and English consonants and vowels.
  • By the end of the course, students will be able to discover and explain the phonological processes in Turkish and English.
  • The student: 6. 1. Explains final devoicing, assimilation, and vowel harmony in Turkish. 6.2. explains flapping, glottalization, nasalization, and lengthening in English. 6.3. diagnoses pronunciation problems for L2 learners resulting from these phonological processes.
