  • By the end of this course, students will be able to understand the concept of addiction and distinguish it from habit and misuse; they will also be able to define substance use disorders according to DSM-5 criteria. They will explain types of addictions (both substance and behavioral) with examples and evaluate the neurobiological, psychological, social, and environmental factors involved. Students will gain knowledge about addiction vulnerability in adolescence and related prevention strategies. They will become familiar with assessment tools and interview techniques used in diagnosing addiction and compare different intervention methods (psychotherapeutic, biological, and social). Finally, they will understand Turkey’s addiction support system and develop appropriate intervention plans based on case examples.
  • Students will critically analyze the individual and contextual risk and protective factors related to the development and maintenance of addiction, and apply this knowledge to design evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies tailored to different populations and addiction types.
