Work Placement Experience
Aims of the Course The aim of this course is to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of the belief systems and cultural structure of the Pamphylia region in Antiquity by examining the origins, historical development, religious practices, and regional characteristics of the cults of gods and goddesses in light of archaeological, epigraphic, numismatic, and ancient written sources. Within this scope, the course aims to evaluate the interactions between the local belief traditions of Pamphylia and the Greek and Roman religious systems, as well as the iconographic features of gods and goddesses, cult practices, rituals, festivals, and religious institutions. Furthermore, it is intended to examine the primary cults of gods and goddesses, sacred areas, temples, altars, votive monuments, and cult-related archaeological finds in Perge, Side, Aspendos, Attaleia, and other cities of Pamphylia. Specifically, the course aims to comparatively address the relationships between the cults of Artemis Pergaia, Athena, Apollon, Zeus, and other local and universal deities with regional identity, urban life, and political authority, as well as the development of the imperial cult during the Hellenistic and Roman periods; and to enable students to analyze architectural remains, sculptures, inscriptions, coins, and other archaeological data related to the cults within their chronological, iconographic, and historical contexts, and to evaluate the religious life of Pamphylia using scientific methods.
