| Aims of the Course |
This course aims to examine the development of Roman architectural ornamentation from the Late Republic to Late Antiquity (1st century BC – 4th century AD), with a particular focus on examples from Anatolia. The course covers architectural block types such as the cornice, architrave, frieze, cymatium, console, and pediment. The decorative elements on these blocks (acanthus, egg-and-dart, bead-and-reel, Lesbos kymation, dentils, rinceaux) are analyzed from typological and formal perspectives. Key phases, such as Augustan classicism, the continuity of the Hellenistic tradition, the interaction between the Roman city and Asia Minor workshops, and the proliferation of drillwork during the Severan period, are discussed. Regional workshop and school traditions, such as those of Pergamon, Aphrodisias, and Pamphylia (Side, Perge), are evaluated comparatively. The course aims to teach how to utilize style criticism and comparative analogy methods in cases where data providing precise dates, such as inscriptions or stratigraphy, are limited. As part of this methodology, the selection of decisive elements for dating, the proposal of date ranges within the framework of terminus post quem and terminus ante quem, and the identification of repairs, construction phases, and the use of spolia are addressed. Thus, it is intended that students will be able to identify and date an architectural block at a catalog level and apply this method to their own research. |
