  • Profile of the Programme

Our department which aims to graduate archaeologists, started giving education  in the Department of Classical Archaeology in 1993-1994 Academic Year.  The department has continued its  education as Archaeology Department beginning from 1998. The sub departments are  Pre-history, Proto-history and Near Eastern Archaeology and Classical Archaeology. The staff of our department have been conducting excavations, surveys and museum research activities in which students also take part, as well as their teaching responsibilities at the department. Our teaching staff are also responsible for conducting excavations in Side in Antalya and Dorylaion (Şarhöyük). The excavations at Çavlum Bronze Age Necropolis in Eskişehir were completed in 2003, and the excavations of Hurmalık Bath and the Theater buildings at Patara in Antalya were completed in 2009, and all of the above mentioned excavations have been conducted by our department staff. The staff and students have also taken part in some other important excavations, such as Arykanda, Aphrodisias, Çatalhöyük, Ephesos, Perge, Pessinus, Kelenderis, Kültepe, Limyra, Olympos, Tarsus, Teos, Tieum and Zeugma in Turkey in collaboration with other foreign or local  universities and research institutes. The staff conducted surveys on Phrygian Rock Monuments in Eskişehir, Afyon and Kütahya provinces and at Karahöyük (Midaion) and Kanlıtaş Höyük. New researches have been carried out by our department in the Archaeological Museums of Antalya, Eskişehir, Isparta, Uşak and Side on numismatic, glass and metal objects. The programme offers compulsory courses on Pre-history, Pro-tohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology and Classical Archaeology. Elective courses are also offered on these subjects and students can also choose other elective courses from various programmes of the university.
