  • Profile of the Programme

The cinema and television industries entered a rapid transformation while entering the 21st century. The development of digital technologies and their repercussions in the media, telecommunication and information sectors have allowed all mass communication tools from television to new media to step towards the future. From its inception, the Department of Cinema and Television has followed and implemented all manner of developments in technology and communication in the educational program, thereby aiming to prepare students for this new future. Not only does the department provide access to all the innovations in the field, it also aims to ensure that graduates become great thinkers and creators in the media and cinema sectors through a comprehensive theoretical education. Established in 1977, the Department of Cinema and Television is the oldest department in the Faculty of Communication Sciences. Graduates of the department have become directors, producers, cinematographers, screenwriters, editors, photographers, administrators and academics in the cinema, television and advertising fields. Students are encouraged to participate in active social environments that provide great opportunities for self-expression, through either the two most active student bodies within Anadolu University – the Cinema Club and the Communications Club, or through the Eskisehir International Film Festival organized by the department and supported by the university since 1998.

Information Regarding the Department

The students of the Department of Cinema and Television primarily focus on three fundamental areas: Production and directing, screenwriting, and theoretical studies. During their first two years of study, students are tasked with courses that are provided to the whole faculty which aim to develop their general understanding of culture and communication sciences such as Sociology, Psychology, Art History, Aesthetics, Introduction to Communication, Communication Theory, Research Methods and Techniques. Students of this department are also tasked with fundamental theoretical courses related to the field of cinema and television such as Technical Basics of Cinema and Television, Screenwriting, and Basic Photography, and many other introductory level theoretical courses in the field. Following the successful completion of these fundamental courses, students continue into their preferred focus area with guidance from their academic counsellors. As such, they are able to select a more specialized curriculum based on their needs to succeed in their chosen field. In addition to the applied work students conduct with the technical facilities provided to them, students are also required to succeed in more advanced courses in the field such as Visual Aesthetics, Film Theory, Film History, Film Analysis and Critique, and Documentary Film. Following the successful completion of the required courses based on their field of focus selected in their second and third years, students are required to complete four separate thesis projects in their final year of study. With the addition of one year of English preparatory school, students complete a total of five years of education while studying under a rich variety of instructors, from a range of instructors from different departments within both the university and the faculty, to experts in their field from within the department. Students additionally attend seminar courses and workshops conducted by professionals from the industry, thereby gaining further skills through the knowledge and experience of these experts. Throughout their studies, students may take advantage of all of the technical equipment and supplemental material at their disposal in the department for both academic and extracurricular projects. Students of the department are therefore encouraged to develop their knowledge and skills both within and beyond the classroom.
